Indoor/Outdoor Tomatoes 2017

Ginger's picture

Started tomatoes indoors as usual, in potting mix. Started three early, three on time (actually, one of those three was late.)

This year's line-up is:

Early starts (transplanted out age 9 weeks):

bucks county - largish
Park's Whopper CR Improved - largish - first try at this
artisan tiger stripe - grape - mixed colors, so don't know whether I've got something new

In-season starts (transplanted out age 4-5 weeks):

Fraoch's grow log

I received an AeroGarden Harvest and a Salsa Garden seed kit as Christmas gifts.

I started the Salsa Garden and only now have I noticed that it is a 7-seed kit (2 tomatoes, 1 pepper and 4 spacers).  Oops.  Well one tomato pod is spaced properly, the other one has the pepper beside it.  Spacers are at the front and in between one tomato and the pepper.  Too late now, we'll see what they do anyway...

We have very hard water here, the hardest in the country, so I set myself up with two big jugs (the kind used in water coolers) of reverse osmosis water and a hand pump.

Aerogarden Ultra LED, Sweet Baby Girl Tomato

Ginger's picture

Replanted my LED Ultra a week ago, this time trying sweet baby girl tomato.

They just taste good. Yes, the fantastico yielded fantastically - but sweet baby girl taste so much better. The seeds came up fast.

Update: Added 2-week photo.

Then 3-week. Pruned above 5th branch at 3 weeks. It already had suckers growing, including from seed leaves - branchy tomato.

199, first 1/1/2016, aged 13 weeks, allowed to die through mid-June

Outdoor Tomatoes 2015

Wasn't sure until today that I was going to complete transplanting this week, but it is done. All 6 tomatoes are out.

I grew all these from seed, baby pictures on this topic. The two beefsteak transplants are 6 weeks old today, the rest 4 weeks old and look stunted for their age. Lineup:

driveway growbox: bucks county and early girl, both returning favorites

balcony growbox: returning heavy-yielder juliet, and new tiger stripe mix grape tomato

Aerogarden Ultra LED - First Grow Tomatoes and Greens

Ginger's picture

Yay! Got my new AG Ultra LED and plugged it in tonight.

First planting: test run.

  • fantastico tomato for the long haul

Temporary test plants:

  • toy choi
  • komatsuna
  • Nevada summercrisp lettuce
  • Red Sails looseleaf lettuce

Started in 0.7 EC Urban Farm Fertilizers (UFF) veg formula in rainwater. Because that's what I fed my other AG's today. No special plan.

Outdoor Tomatoes 2013

Ginger's picture

Postponed planting to after Mother's Day, but apparently... not long enough. I think I may lose all or most of my GrowBox tomatoes. The temperatures didn't quite reach frost this weekend... I think. But the tomato plants were badly damaged. Not sure, but maybe the marginally-fatal cold, heavy winds, and lashing rain left the plants hurt, then the rains made the soil completely waterlogged, and essentially the plants got fertlizer burn. If that made sense...

Aerogarden Lightscreen Cherry Tomato 2013

Ginger's picture

Le gasp. *Gisette* is trying a cherry tomato in an Aerogarden. Took me long enough, huh?  I want to show how the lightscreen works on a cherry tomato, since that's what most people have experience with. And a steadier, modest harvest would be nice. Full size tomatoes take an awfully long time per fruit.

Aerogarden Determinate Mid-Sized Tomato

In this grow (almost finished), I tried same lightscreen, different mid-size tomato variety. The concept was to offer more than one choice of tomato with the lightscreen product. And I'd never tried a determinate. And... that was probably the right choice.  The plant yielded 8 ripe tomatoes, that all ripened within 2 weeks of each other. It then started working on another flush of fruit, true. But I'd rather get a more steady stream of harvest.
