Winter 2013 indoor cucumber competition

Beth11's picture
 Hi All,

I spent last weekend taking apart the seed starting/winter growing area, cleaning and disenfecting everything from the top to bottom. Found that mold had been growing between the two shelves I had stacked together for a former project. I feel better now! So, I plan on growing two cucumber plants in 10” self watering pots. Tasty Jade and Picolino. Jade is self pollinating but does have male flowers. Picolino is self pollinating with only female flowers. Jade is full size; Picolino is a small English cuc. Let's see how they do in a head to head competition in identical pots/potting soil and brand new t-8 fluorescent bulbs (three shop lights)! I've got to wait for seeds to arrive so I'll be starting seeds this week along with Ace bell peppers in an Aerogarden to be transplanted. Should be a cool project!

Aw! Did you get pretty good cuke harvests before the end? Or never really got happy?

Well, both plants rapidly
Well, both plants rapidly declined and died. I didn't like the pot I had them in - I got it off the web and it never wicked right. I think they competed for nutrients. Next time one variety to a pot. Almost time for outside seeding (although you wouldn't know it was spring - we have a rain/snow mix today. Yuck)

I might feel guiltier about
I might feel guiltier about suffering cucumber plants, if I weren't so eager to eat cukes all year. As it is, I'm pretty OK with them looking battered and producing cukes for me.

Any difference between Jade
Any difference between Jade and picolino, on how bedraggled the plant looks? Though may not be a fair comparison, since the picolino has ripened more fruit.

Picolino's OK for inside.
Picolino's OK for inside. Prefer Jade and would rather wait. Both really good outside.

Picolino set the first 3, then quit for awhile. Now 4 plumping up. Plant looks awful. Jade starting to set, one growing at the base of the plant.
