Hi, hi,

Anybody have any strong opinions / experience with transplanting a fruiting plant? Like, while it's bearing fruit. My potted pepper plant -

carmen pepper - pot too small?
From MiscGarden-2009-04-18

- seems awfully big for that flower pot. Two feet tall? Close to its final height, but... I think it would be happier if its pot were bigger. But with 3 fairly big and a dozen or so littler peppers on it, maybe it would hate being repotted too much. But then again, the season is yet young - indeed, it hasn't even lived outside yet more than a few hours.

Think I should re-pot it? The only reason it was in such a small pot, was that I thought I might have to put it near AGs or on seedling shelf, where its height was already a problem.

Thanks for input in advance!

Hi Gisette,

Well, it might drop the peppers if you transplant.  But it is early in the season.  Maybe just plop the whole rootball in a bigger pot without disturbing the roots. If you give it a bigger pot you won't have to water as much (it is going outside, right?).  I grew Carmen last year and the plants were 3' tall (as well as Giant Marconi).  A bigger pot will also be more stable, don't you think?

Thanks, Beth. They got to 3', huh? Yes, it is early in the season, and I could just pick the biggest peppers first, to reduce stress... Maybe I should wait until it's warm enough for it to move outside full-time and then give it a much bigger pot. The small one is good for constantly repositioning it.

Yeah, the rootball shouldn't be much disturbed.

Were you happy with the carmen peppers?

I think if you plan on putting it outside in the ground anyway that you should just wait & do that. That makes the most sense to me.

Gisette, I'm fond of italian frying peppers and Carmen did well for me. I like Giant Marconi for freezing. Beth

Jessi - the pepper is going to stay in a container. Just a question of which size.

Beth - good to know re Carmen. I've only eaten one so far - green - but it was good!
