Swiss Chard under lights 2010
Bright Lights Swiss Chard seeded 21 Nov 2010 in a 74 quart (70 L) storage box. Container measures 17" x 42" x 6". Drainage holes drilled in the bottom of the container and the lid is used underneath to catch water overflow. 40 seeds planted at 4" spacing. Miracle grow potting mix. On my nifty rolling plant stand. Under fluorescent lights (3 fixtures now) 16 hours on/8 hours off.
2 Dec 2010: Swiss Chard sproutlets. Not all sprouted so I reseeded a few more:
8 January 2011: Swiss chard growing well. It likes the extra light. Have harvested 3 times so far, 14 oz, 16 oz and 20 oz. This is a must grow - no bitterness at all!
5 February 2011: Pick number four was 2 pounds and harvest #5 today was 3 pound, 2 ounces of tasty greens. We have garlic sauteed swiss chard in the freezer now! Some huge leaves!
26 February 2011: Harvested 1 Lb 6 oz tonight to try a new receipe. Barely made a dent. Looks like this grow will yield well over 10 Lbs of greens over a 3 month period. Honestly, we're tired of swiss chard! Excellent grow!
18 March 2011. Picked 2 Lbs on 11 March and the last 1 Lb 6 oz tonight (to give away - we're tired of Swiss Chard!!). Very successful grow, about 12 lbs of greens in the winter. Grow done, Swiss chard container outside ready to be dumped..
The Swiss chard look great, Beth - good productivity pretty quick!
Yowza, Beth. Those look awesome! Nice size harvests, too! Lot of produce for 2.5 mos.
Hi Gisette,
We're getting tired of swiss chard every week! Thank goodness it freezes well! Healthy plants!
Beth
Sounds like a high-end problem, Beth, harvesting too much swiss chard! ![]()
I wonder if spinach could be persuaded to grow like that... Lot more versatile, eating wise. Sure is hard to grow, tho.

Beth - 3 fixtures? Like, 6 x 32W 6500K bulbs? Wow.
