Rocky cucumbers in an Aerogarden Pro 200

Hi All,

Yup!  Trying a cucumber in the AG again.  This one is a Beit Alpha (mini) cuc from Johnny's called Rocky.  Going to use the Aerofalls (www.aerofalls.com) nutes and tap (well) water.  I think I'll focus on the 8-25-17 formulation.  Less Nitrogen and more potassium.  It is in a Pro 200 that currently won't run the (brand new) pump so I've got an airstone in there.  Starting two cells, but only going to grow one.  Brand new light bulbs and supplimental lighting from a CFL light fixture.  Seeded 16 Oct.  We shall see!  No pix until we have sprouts.

Both Cucs sprouted 19 October.  In plain water at the moment,

22 Oct: Using 8-25-17 nutes.  EC 1.3, pH 6.0

24 Nov: Back to 8-25-17 nutes, EC 1.7, pH 6.0.  Sad plant but cucs forming:

2 Dec: still a sad plant, one cuc fat.  Going to pick it now to encourage more cucs to form:

8 January 2011. Really sad plant, but I've harvested 3 cucs so far and two more are plumping up.  Feeding it 16-16-16 nutes. It doesn't seem to care what I feed it!  EC 1.7 pH 6.0. Grwth habit is compact. I will try this again.

Hi Gisette,  Roots are nice

Hi Gisette,

Roots are nice and white.  When I had it in the ag with an airstone, all the roots grew over the airstone.  When I switched to the pump ag the roots spread out.  Not a problem with the roots!

Time lapse ought to be a lot

Time lapse ought to be a lot of fun, on cucumbers.

Would you bother growing Rocky in soil? Liked it enough?

I'm really curious what the root condition is on this plant. Any fuzzy brown stuff in the reservoir?

Hi All, Rocky put out a total

Hi All,

Rocky put out a total of 5 cucs. Just about dead now.  Nute selection didn't make a difference in the health of the plant - although it did stay tiny!  Gonna terminate this grow.  I plan on one more cuc grow, just because I want to use my new time lapse camera (when I get it for my birthday next week).  I'm going to grow a full size cuc (Jade) that is parthenocarpic (sets fruit without pollination). Look for the new grow log next week.  Even if it doesn't do well, we can at least watch its demise!

Hi Gisette, Merry Christmas

Hi Gisette,

Merry Christmas Eve!  Rocky tastes good, not bitter, not dry - just trying to share one is a pain. I'll see how a full size cucs do - that would be my preference..

Ho Ho Ho,

Beth

Sorry to see the plant

Sorry to see the plant looking so sad, Beth. Yeah, plumping out a fruit really seems to stress a cucurbit out, doesn't it? They grow such big heavy fruits, so very fast.

Yeah, I never tried the Photobucket lightboxer in Chrome before. (I use the Picasa Lightboxer.) Will have to look at why that doesn't work. Sorry.

So how do the Rocky cucumbers taste? I was thinking of buying Rocky or Socrates from Johnny's for my indoor-cuke growing attempts, but decided I'd wait to see what you think. Recommended? In potting mix, not water. I'm fairly convinced cukes don't like their roots so wet.

 Hi All,   Cuc plant looks

 Hi All,

Cuc plant looks awful. It is still growing slowly.  After the first cuc, all the babied shriveled.  I guess the plant could only support one cuc maturing.  Anyway, it set 3 more cucs. One almost ready and two smaller ones.

I'll post pictures in a couple of minutes - I forgot they're on my phone and I need to send them to photobucket.  Also, I can't figure out how to use the lightboxer in google chrome.

I'm picking it tomorrow for

I'm picking it tomorrow for use on a sandwich - along with some mustard greens.  It isn't big but still a cuc in December!  I'll let you know.  By the way, I'm not happy with the light green color of the plant leaves so I added 1/2 mL of gen hydro nutes (5-0-1 part).  We'll see what happens...

Emptied and refilled cuc

Emptied and refilled cuc today 27 Nov 2010.  8-25-17, EC 1.6 pH 6.0.  At least one cuc plumping up.  Plant has grown new leaves where it got topped by hitting the lights.  We'll see if other cucs mature-
