Quinault Attempt 15 Mar 2009

This is my first attempt using AG and growing strawberries.

Roots are wash clean of dirt and planted in an AG3 on the 15th Mar 2009.  Substrate used are some small hydrotons that I can fit in as the existing root system took out most of the space in the pods.  Hydrotons are used to cover the top of the pods to reduce light leakage into the nutrient bowl.

Nutrient used, 1st week General Hydroponics Flora Series mix with Flora Blend and Subculture B.  Emailed GH, they said should have started off with Subculture M which my local store do not stock.  Ordered a pack, hope they arrive before my roots.

1 Gal mix, 2.5ml Micro, 2.5ml Grow, 2.5ml Bloom, 15ml Blend.

This is the result on the 18th March.  Two out of three.  Left two seems to be sprouting, the right most plant seems to have fallen to damping.

That's a pity with the right one, appears it did not like the transplant - at least the other two seem to be sprouting.

Where did you get the idea for the subculture mix? I had to go on the GH website to find out what it was all about, well, well, learn something new every day.

Do you think I should give the right one a few more days to see if it re-establish itself or should I just re-pod it with another root ASAP?

The subculture mix I read on the GH blog initially.  They wrote one about using it in their bio-filter, then I read more about how the beneficial bacterial and fungi works to improve the root system from a hydroponic magazine the hydroponic store I visit gives for free, so went on to try it.

Very cool, Stonecold, thanks for sharing! So this is a bacterial - fungus suite that can live in hydroponics? Is this an airstone AG you have them in, or do you have that running through a water pump? Looks like an AG3 in the picture?

Yes, this is a bacterial - fungus suite designed for hydroponics, at least that is what GH said.  I have an AG3, airstone.

stonecold - give it a few more days, see if it comes back - if not, another one in before you change the nutes.

Pull out the right most pod today.  Entire top of the plant was slimy, rotted through from the looks of it.  Put in a new root from the soil planter, hope that it starts off.

Looks like my aerogarden's quinault all damp off.  Sigh.  Maybe not enough nutrients, should have go to the mild growth stage.  Change the nuts to this stage mix now, see if  new sprouts will form.

Have you lost the lot stonecold?

I'm not sure that the nutes are the problem, they should effectively grow with just water. Just to be clear, the whole plant was put into an AG3 type sponge/peat medium and covered with hydroton. Essentially what this website has done but without the hydroton?

I'm wondering if the little seedlings are not strong enough/developed to transplant yet?

Peat, they are not seedlings but bareroots sold in packages, probably year-old roots from soil.  Probably the pack I bought was too old, think among the last of the packs on the shelves, which are pulled off the shelves then next time I visited that Walmart.  Probably most have already sprouted and died again in the package before I bought them using up energy that they can't replenish.  Will retry when the Tristar arrive, should have better results.  I did not wrap the roots in sponges, too massive, just some hydrotons and into the pod it goes.

One big massive plant survived in a planter, the root system and crown is too big to fit in the pods of AG.  Maybe if it grows enough runner I will try them on the AG again with sponges.  Any recommendations on what ratio should I use on the planter for the flora nuts?  Further dilution of 1 part hydroponic mix to 2 parts water?

I'm with you now. Do you have any pictures of the surviving plant - I'm wondering how big it is?

I will take a picture of it when I get home.  Roughly 2 hrs.

Here are the pics.  Bio-dome is for size reference.

I'm going to say not to use any feed on them at this stage, just use water, this is what I've been doing with mine.

When the fruits develop, give them a little food then. It should be potassium based and not nitrogen, so as not to promote leafy growth.

After I planted mine in my coco-coir, I did lots of digging round on the internet looking for help - this is one of the better ones I came across.
