I just tried the game last night - presto hooked. But I love the Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games, so... For those who haven't tried anything of this ilk, you plow and plant seed, and come back later and reap what you've sown. Eventually you amass quite a bit of money this way, though you more or less start out broke and are only allowed basic seeds. The social networking twist is that you can do for your neighbors what you cannot do for yourself - fertilize fields, and send items as free gifts, though you can't afford to buy them for yourself. And they reciprocate.
