Do we think this would grow well in an Aerogarden?
I think it's a husk tomato, supposedly flavored like a pineapple.
P.S. (Thanks so much to whoever posted a link here before to Value Seeds! Cool site.
)
Thanks, Mary.
Huh, just looked it up - it is related to the Chinese lantern plant. Also the tomatillo.
Hi Gisette,
I'm actually growing this outside this year in a pot for the first time! It is Little Lanterns from T&M seeds. This variety is supposed to be a smaller plant than regular CG. I can let you know how it goes.
Beth
Ooh, thanks, Beth, I look forward to hearing about it!
Hi Gisette,
Talked to my Mom. She used to grow Chinese Laterns as ornamentals but have never eat the fruits. She said they are pretty large bushes and are ugly / ragged looking as a plant but cuttings can be nice. They are almost unkillable and it took her a lot effort to get it out of her garden. There are some chinese alimentation that seems to indicate chinese latern is edible but not sure about it personally. The papery skin of chinese laterns tend to be red tinted.
My mom still grow something she calls ground cherries or earth cherries that looks a bit like the cape gooseberry you shown and somewhat similar to the Chinese latern except the paper skin is not red. She did not plant them originally but they came out naturally, probably from some bird droppings. She left them there but later found them for sale at the farmers market for about $3 a pint (more expansive than raspberries) and was told they were edible so she starts eating them. I had some too and they are rather tasty and a light pineappley taste. Similar large, somewhat ragged bushes probably the size if you hold your hands together in a circle..
I think my Mom has some seeds of chinese latern if someone wants some.
Thanks, Mary, the second does sound like the cape gooseberry. (It is a variety of ground cherry.)
Does sound a bit big for an Aerogarden, tho.

Gisette,
My mom grows Chinese Laterns and something that looks very much like this. I can try to ask her tomorrow about how big it gets.
