Buzzy Seeds Grow Kit - Tiny Tim Tomatoes
These really are great, Jessi. Can't wait to see how they do! You're planning to have lights solved before they sprout?
Thanks G!
Yea, I'm still trying to figure all that out. I havent gotten to Home Depot yet. Probably Sunday although I have to say that corner of the room is awfully bright right now.
I cant imagine having to make it brighter. I need to figure out something that will also work in the summer because man does it get hot and humid in NYC.
Ladies and gentlemen...
We have a sprout!

Congratulations, Jessi.
That was very quick for a tomato.
Thanks G!
I thought so too! I'm the happy dance right now!
In just a matter of a few hours the little sprout has 6 new buddies!

WooHoo! Way to go!
It looks like I have 9 plants coming up out of the 10 seeds I planted.
I have a really good feeling about these tomatoes!

I just know they are going to do better than the ones I tried to grow in the aerogarden!
Is the pot big enough for one of them?
Its big enough for one. I will give 3 to my mom & 2 to my sister.![]()
And repot the rest for me
Fully grown they should look like this!
I cant wait!
Great job!! Definitely cull it to the strongest one in a week or so and put some holes in the bottom of your pots that don't have them. You can water them all you want in the sink and let the excess run out the bottom. You don't want them too wet and they need a regular cycle of water and oxygen once they get started..

Thanks! What does "cull it" mean?
What do u suggest I do to put holes in it? The pot is plastic... should I just get another pot?
Another pot sounds good. Preferably a self-watering pot - those have a little reservoir at the bottom. Walmart carries nice ones in assorted sizes. Or you could go for looks... so long as it has drainage.
Cull = thin. Remove all but the one you want to keep.
The last seed finally decided to join us today. The others are doing well!

I think I am going to get those things I saw on TV called Aqua Globes so that I would have to even worry about over or under watering! ![]()

Classy! You could probably manage the same with a cute little Perrier water bottle or somesuch. I think Bruce said he uses wine and scotch bottles for his big potted tomatoes.
The blown glass ones are pretty though!
Pretty yeah! but if I can manage the same effect with a Perrier bottle please do tell!
Good going Jessi, congrats! We have 4 aquaglobes and they work well for small house plants but they're a pain to fill through the tiny hole and a good size plant will suck one dry in hours. For heavy duty work, use a bottle with a long neck like a wine or liquor bottle. The longer the neck the better. Fill it with 1/3 nute mix and 2/3 water then stick it in the pot as deep as it will go. Gravity takes it from there. Our trash tomatoes go through a 1.75 liter bottle every 2-3 days.
Sweet! I guess I will need this once my plants actually get bigger than my pinky! The aqua globes sure are preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetty! lol
I was thinking... I have 10 plants now... I could keep at least 3 for myself & give the rest to my mom & sister. 3 tomato plants should be enough tomatoes to keep me well fed right? Enough for salsa, tomato sauce, bruschetta, salad, sanwiches...
What do you think?
If you have good strong light three should be more than enough. Lots and lots of light is the kicker, LOTS of light - we have 4 tomatoes in hanging baskets with whiskey bottle feeders taking over the laundry room just from a south facing window. They grew long and leggy until they hit the light then started to supercharge. Even now, the tomatoes away from the window ripen but they're half the size of the ones in full light. The four plants give us most all the tomatoes we need and we eat a lot of salad. Southerly exposure is most important tho, any other direction won't work nearly as well if at all. And being in New Mexico there's very little to block the sun.
EDIT..... we were at a Walgreens drug store today and they had aquaglobes cheaper than you can get from infomercials but they're only good for small plants and require lots of patience to fill.
Walgreeeeeens! Sweet! I will just have to get those! Especially if they are cheaper and maybe put 2 in 1 pot
thanks for the scoop!
These tomato plants are hilarious to me!
I turn the pot through out the day since they are currently in the outrider position
and no matter which way I turn them, they turn to face the light in like 10 mins! Its amazing!

But my fun with that will be short lived as I am setting up a 27w CFL just for them ![]()
Hi All,
Question for everyone- When I start seeds with regular fluorescent bulbs, I make sure the seedlings are only an inch or two from the bulb to keep them nice and stocky. With the 27 w CFL, how far should Jessi put the light from her tom seedlings? That was one concern I had with the ag deluxe - that the bulbs (3) were so far from the deck - but it wasn't a problem. With one bulb, sorta like an ag 3, should it be 6 inches or so? The bulbs do generate heat...
Beth
Good question Beth!
I have the light 2 inches away right now and I noticed last night that 2 of them have already reached right up out the pot to get closer to the light. I can see them over the edge of the pit just standing there waving at me...lol! I thought about the heat factor but they really seem to like it. I have 4 AG3s and the lights are no where near as close to the seedlings as 2 inches BUT the seedlings seem to grow much closer in the AG3 than the ones I have in soil! Go figure!
Beth,
It's basically the same distance with CFL's, you place them within inches of the plants; but not touching. Lumen output drops sharply with CFL's, they have to be close.
A rule of thumb which I use, place the back of you hand under the light, move you hand up to the light until it gets a little too warm. Back off your hand, this is where you want your light from the plant. They won't get burnt as you didn't.
Check the plants for a few days afterwards, if they aren't looking good then raise the lamp.
They like the light...

And so do the strawberries next to them & the basil bottom nearby.
The basil plant has even started growing extra stems at the bottom...sooooo interesting!
My instructions say to transplant these babies when they have 3 true leaves and are between 2 & 4 inches high. Is it time yet?

It's definitely time to thin them. The ones with two stems right on top of each other - just cut one stem with scissors, don't try to separate them. But yes, at this size, there's already a fair bit of root.
Urg! I cant bare to do that! I prefer to try to transplant them all... saving the best 3 for me & giving the others away. Why cant I attempt to separate them?

Mix soil with water before placing seeds.
Home Sweet Home!
