Blueberry

Posted in

My daughter got excited about an ad for top-hat blueberries (not where I bought it), so we're trying that. Hopefully trying a bunch of fruit this summer - blueberries, ground cherries, and an assortment of cantaloupe. Have high hopes for the little blueberry!

20110611: ate first blueberry - way too early! it flowered out of season, alas.

I have my doubts about this blueberry... The nursery kept it too warm, and it was blooming in early April. It should have bloomed in mid-late May, I think. There were no bees to pollinate it, nor any nearby other blueberry varieties to pollinate with. And I don't have an artificially balmy spot for it. Just out in the torrential rains and high winds, getting soggy roots. We'll see...

Looks like some of the blueberries 'took'.

Yay!  How are you going to protest them against critters?

Hi Beth - dunno how I missed your post! I dunno how I'll protect the blueberries - a small bag made of row cover, perhaps? I dunno when I'll need to cover them. Chances are good the entire crop could be gone the day I notice the birds have started after 'em, huh...

My daughter ate the first blueberry today - so very way out of season! Blueberry season here is late July, I think... Not many berries on the plant, also due to flowering so far before season. Oh, well. Maybe it'll do better next year.

I haven't tried 'em yet (it was her idea!), but she says it was very good.

Much to my astonishment, so far I think my daughter's eaten more blueberries than the birds. Not a lot of blueberries available, mind you... But some! Maybe the little bush will do better next year. Maybe I need a second bush...

Cool! I can see a future gardener in your daughter! You are such an inspiration! How could see NOT want to grow things? Beth

LOL, Beth! So far she's resisted the gardening urge quite well... Says I'm a plant person and she's an animal person, and she'd rather have more pets.

I think she resented me gardening instead of playing with her when she was little. As she's come to adulthood, tho, she's liking the vegetables more and more. And I planted a lot of her faves this year. She loves the peas, beans, carrots, cukes, melons, and blueberries. Won't eat the eggplant and peppers without complaint. Mixed feelings on greens and tomatoes. Haven't tried her on a ground cherry yet.

Still getting blueberries, one a day or so. The commercial blueberry orchards start pick-your-own in a couple weeks.

Still ripening a few. One more week til pick-your-own blueberry season opens, I think.

This plant looked pretty dreadful for a while. But now it's beginning to look more like a proper little ornamental.
