Basil Garden 2 [Planted 6/16/2015]

Tags:

Hi,

On 6/16/2015, I started a basil garden on an Ultra LED. It consists of 6 Genovese Basil pods and 1 Thai Basil Pod. They are all AG pods. They have all crested the label, and look to be another promising basil garden.

Nor mine. That's why I'm always looking for natural ways to drift off. I won't take sleeping pills, yuck!

I like it on pizza, and I

I like it on pizza, and I blend it with lemongrass, lavender, chamomile, and rooibos tea, before bed to help me sleep. I just made 3 quarts, last night. I also made 9 quarts of 2 different varieties, as well. I need to clear some more fridge space.

Basil plants get huge outside - big as pepper plants.

This garden has gotten very crowded. Funny, the two back corner pods aren't doing well. I may have over-pruned them. I already have a packed pint jar of dried basil. Tough situation, huh?

Yes, at a couple of weeks you

Yes, at a couple of weeks you'll want to thin down to the healthiest looking plant per pod. Then, as Ginger said below, you'll want to trim off the top growth tip, 1/4" or so above a pair of leaves just below when the plant gets to about 4-5 inches tall. When you make this cut, the plant will produce two new growth tips just below where you made the cut. This makes the plant bush out, instead of shooting up into the lights. Because if you are forced to raise the lights because the basil is getting too tall, then your other lower growing herbs won't be getting enough light. As AG says about growing herbs, "lower the plants, don't raise the lights."

I would recommend you watch the following video:

And this is an older Aerogrow video for pruning at week 3, but YouTube has subsequent videos for Week 4, 5, 6, etc. as well:

Now, I've pinched these off, then taken a small harvest already. I need to harvest again tomorrow morning.

Are we supposed to thin them

Are we supposed to thin them to ONE plant? Because on my AeroGarden Gourmet Herb Garden I have 4 Genovose Basil plants in one pod.
