Second batch of asparagus - enough to feed 5 people. Third batch picked went to a friend. Fourth picking will be 'et tomorrow! I figured out that the asparagus beetles like the real thin stalks. I'm leaving one as a bug trap. No bugs on the thick stalks. I think that is the real challenge down here establishing an asparagus patch. New asparagus is always thin and you aren't supposed to pick. Last try got so buggy I killed it off. This patch is now 4 years old (100 crowns!). I can harvest the thick spears and remove the thin buggy ones. No eggs, no new bugs. I don't even spray the beetles - I just go out and tap the adults in my palm and squish them. They drop off the plant and play dead when disturbed. They are really dead when I get through with them!
Wow! Looks so good...
Does asparagus make you happy, Beth? I've only ever heard of one other person who has the same metabolic quirk - eating asparagus makes me happy. No idea what nutrient in the asparagus causes that - wish I knew!
No obvious effect other than stinky pee. Weird only I can smell the asparagus pee (had people down and they've never noticed an odor). I'll pay more attention tomorrow, though. I wouldn't mind feeling happy!
Beth
I can smell it, and so can my daughter.
It took me a long time to realize that asparagus made me happy. Pity it costs so much.
OK, so I really need to be kicked since I am grumbling I have to pick the spears every day. Takes 3 days to pick enough for a meal right now. Many more sprouting. I'm just not in a happy place right now - maybe I need to eat more asparagus! If you lived closer I'd share!
Take Care,
Beth
Well, I hope the weather for your weekend is as glorious as this Fri-Mon is shaping up here - 60's, brilliant sun, trees starting to leaf out, cherry and pear and magnolia in bloom. I don't need asparagus to be happy in weather like this.
Sooner or later, my gardens will start to grow, too! Four gorgeous days with no thunderstorms ought to help!

Yummmm, Beth.
I want a garden... a real garden...
