Aerogarden Greens and Flowers, 2011

New Year, new topic. Hopefully I got the name right this year. All Aerogardens are fine. The 3-week romaines aren't quite ready to harvest yet - this is usually true of romaines, they run a week slower getting started than the tenderer-leafed lettuces.

5 week (in AG) vinca cora, from cuttings 5 week KRC lettuce (2 plants per pod) 3 week all-season mixed romaines

I agree with Aerogrow - the vinca make an elegant garden, much more tidy looking than most of the flowers I've grown.

Replanted the 7-pod garden

Replanted the 7-pod garden yesterday, and started replacements for the 3-podders as well, in a Park Starts block. Camera battery died before I got pix of the minis but they look much the same, except the Korean red curl is getting kinda spent.(Edit:  added mini pix.)

One nice side effect of growing the vinca in the AG mini is that I've been collecting vinca seed this past week. Vinca cora and the mediterranean broadeye vina do reseed themselves out in my garden, and the plants come out pretty nice, though rather late in the summer if they grow from last year's seed outdoors. Nice replacement plants, anyway. But it's hard to collect the seed outdoors. Much easier from the AG.

Finally replanted toy choi

Finally replanted toy choi mini last weekend, with KRC lettuce, and got rid of the impatiens. I don't know what insect infested them. It hadn't seemed to bother the vinca until I took the impatiens away, then the vinca was all that was left, so... Drenched that in 3-in-1 spray (miticide, fungicide, insecticide). Hopefully that's done, and the vinca will prosper alone. Whatever the bug was, it didn't really kill anything, just made the plants unsightly. Got busy with other things, and the AG's suffered neglect, basically.

No more toy choi. Haven't

No more toy choi. Haven't replanted yet, since I had no power when I harvest the last of them. And it wasn't clear when I'd get power back - for much of the state, they expect it'll take a week or more. I got lucky to only be without power 24 hours!

5 week little caesar romaine 5 weeks - second toy choi harvest impatiens and vinca, 5 weeks in AG

These flowers don't seem to be getting any less homely...

Yesterday switched from

Yesterday switched from starting nutes (general 1:1:1 ratio, 0.6-0.8 EC), to ~1.6 EC vegetative or bloom. They were definitely ready for it. First flower blooming, and the toy choi are starting to look very munchable. I let them keep 2 per pod on 2 of the 3 pods this time, to see what happened. No real diff in size yet between the sharing and non-sharing pods.

2 week Little Caesar romaine 2 week toy choi 2 week impatiens and vinca from cuttings (2 week in AG - 4 weeks from cutting)

Planted the remaining vinca

Planted the remaining vinca and impatiens cuttings in my mother's Aerogarden. Her garden had only 2 trailing vinca left of a garden of cuttings I set her up with, probably a year ago. So they'll continue, plus new vinca + impatiens.

Gave up on the Korean green

Gave up on the Korean green curl lettuce garden and replanted with Little Caesar, which seems a bit more soggy-sponge tolerant. And fired up the AG minis - one toy choi, one impatiens and vinca from cuttings. The flowers doing really well.

After a couple month's

After a couple month's hiatus, slowly plugging the Aerogardens back in for winter. The 7-podder is doing Korean green curl lettuce, which is the slowest-germinating lettuce I've ever met. Have some flower cuttings with roots that are ready to get a mini, as soon as I get around to it.
