2014 Aerogarden Greens and Flowers

The minis continue here from the 2013 topic, but the toy choi/green onions are 1 week old now - time for a 2014 topic.
9 week mustard and senposai, 23 week mimulus 1 week toy choi and green onions 1 week green onion in Aerogarden

I'm guessing one green onion per pod, but I'll leave two in one pod, to check that. I'd really like a continual supply of green onion in the kitchen. We'll see how that works out.

I planted green onions in potting mix the same day. Those are too small to be worth a photo yet - just emerged. I hope to replace my windowbox chives with windowbox green onions. We don't eat the chives anymore. They're just pretty, especially the purple pom-poms in spring, and the tall green spray contrast with short annual flowers. Anyway, growing onions is my learning theme this year. Along with brussel sprouts (for fall).

Four week lettuces (2 AG's)

Four week lettuces (2 AG's) at harvestable size, older summercrisp still going strong.

Two week lettuces coming

Two week lettuces coming along. Already harvested the red lettuce from the LED. But it wasn't red... It stayed fairly red when the hood was down at minimum (bronze, at least), but as the hood raised for the tomato, it got pretty green. Not full grown at 4 weeks, but big enough to interfere with the tomato.

Planted 12 more lettuce today

Planted 12 more lettuce today. The 7-podder is overdue for replanting, and got the other mini planted. Trying a new variety - a quick red heading variety called Arctic Ice, plus summercrisp.

Also included, pictures from 2 week test lettuces in my new LED Ultra - they do very well in there! A red sails looseleaf and a summercrisp. Red lettuce makes a great light test. (It's redder if the light is good.)

At this point I have one Deluxe AG (with dead base) left dormant.

What a difference 3 weeks

What a difference 3 weeks makes - heh. The little pepper looks about ready to outgrow this arrangement - already has buds developing. And looks like it could use more light and less water.

Three of the Aerogardens are

Three of the Aerogardens are back in business - slightly. smiley Some lettuces, and one is providing light for a baby potted pepper for the moment. I've been hopping busy lately, and not even replacing AG reservoirs, so... Still need less garden chores outdoors before these really get any attention.

Choho/komatsuna/toy choi
Choho/komatsuna/toy choi about done, but I have a glut of greens harvesting now. So, this AG needs replanting - maybe next week. The outdoor komatsuna and choho will harvest first, though smaller - release tomatoes from competition.

5 week toy choi, misome choho, and komatsuna - harvest size, but have lots of greens at harvest size now 6 week rutgers and bucks county tomatoes, lettuce, komatsuna, choho, parsley in side pot

Not sure why my latest
Not sure why my latest splasher is doing so poorly. The AG summercrisp has been slow, but now harvesting nicely. But its agemate splasher lettuce hasn't even harvested yet and is still puny at 8 weeks - über-slow. It's using hydroton (old reused hydroton) - but I used that before in a splasher OK. So - dunno.

8 week flowers - mimulus, snapdragon, vinca - vinca has a bud 8 week summercrisp lettuce - yum 8 week summercrisp lettuce in hydroton - worst splasher grow ever - this has never been harvested. 3 week toy choi, misome choho, and komatsuna (front left, I think) - 2 pods failed to thrive (toy choi and komatsuna)

Hope to see the first vinca bloom this week. The snapdragon keeps growing into the lights, so... no buds.

I have the choho and komatsuna growing out in a growbox, too - slower, since it's been pretty cool out. I ate an out-take komatsuna (I think) from the AG group (2 pods failed to thrive). Tasted more like tendergreen mustard than horseradish, but it was stunted.

radishes starting to plump, one lettuce (mid rear), 4 choho (center front), 8 komatsuna (rear)

Finally harvesting
Finally harvesting summercrisp - this batch of lettuce has been unusually slow. Probably because I mostly turned the furnace off, so they're growing at around 60°F. (Why is it that 60°F indoors seems too cold to me in winter, but lovely in spring through autumn? I dunno.)

6 week summercrisp lettuce now harvesting - slow, turned off the furnace mostly 6 week flowers - vinca, mimulus, and snapdragon

Ended up with only 4 pods of
Ended up with only 4 pods of flowers, with 2 of them snapdragons. So kicked on the snaps outdoors, and I'm back to one greens mini and one flower mini.
5 week summercrisp lettuce and flowers - mimulus, snapdragon, vinca (not quite visible) 5 week toy choi - replanted this Aerogarden with more toy choi, komatsuna, choho replanted pro100 and summer crop seedlings  summercrisp lettuce and 12 week peppers now in final pots - elder pepper moved to a window

The last toy choi batch finished, and I've been Shopping Asian Vegetable Seeds again. Yesterday replanted the Pro100 with toy choi, komatsuna, and choho, a komatsuna-tatsoi hybrid. Planted the latter two outside in a growbox last weekend, too. They all mature in about a month.

Happy plants. You know you
Happy plants. You know you picked slow flowers when vinca is at the head of the pack...

3 week toy choi (1 week in the Aerogarden) 3 week splasher summercrisp lettuce (only 1 week in the splasher yet) 3 week summercrisp lettuce, vinca, and maybe twinkle phlox? 3 week summercrisp lettuce and maybe snapdragon and mimulus
