Aquaculture

Oh, nifty! I ran into this thing - an aquaponics system at Home Depot. Fish farming below, to generate fertilizer for plant farming above.

Replacing the AG bulbs

I always hem and haw about replacing the AG bulbs, don't want to spend money on it, etc. But! I just replaced my Pro100 bulbs for the first time since July. Big difference! Very visible change in light. And my bio PAR detectors (Korean red curl lettuce) agree - the lights are brighter. (The lettuce got redder overnight.)

Aerogarden Competitors

I'd been wondering when we might see more Aerogarden competitors... Check out this page at Burpee, the "Power Plant" series of items, including the "Power Grow Lamp" with bulb. A more modular approach than Aerogrow's all-in-one.

Deals and Sales

Just got a newsletter from aerogrow - they're offering $30 off if you buy two AG3's. Holiday gift promotion, I think.

I'm glad they're now selling them with the English Cottage Garden (or gourmet herb) kits. I bought my mini from another vendor, because I wanted the English Cottage Garden, but Aerogrow only sold the mini with Mountain Meadow (or maybe herbs) at the time.

Mini mod - external aerator

My first Aerogarden Mini came with a really loud aerator.

Aerogrow customer support was wonderful, as always. They couldn't send a replacement part to fix this loud mini, so they sent me a whole new mini. Which was much quieter.

Extending the height of the lamps

Key bit of intell:  you can raise the lights higher than the last knob on the pro100 and classic Aerogardens!

Fun with reflective blankets

Other members had mentioned this, but I'd never tried it until today :  using shiny emergency blanket material around the AG to reflect light back onto the plants. I decided to try it, not for the AG's per se, but to try to make the most of my western exposure sliding glass door in my bedroom, to see if my potted pepper might eek out a life indoors.
