Aerogarden Ultra LED - First Grow Tomatoes and Greens

Yay! Got my new AG Ultra LED and plugged it in tonight.

First planting: test run.

  • fantastico tomato for the long haul

Temporary test plants:

  • toy choi
  • komatsuna
  • Nevada summercrisp lettuce
  • Red Sails looseleaf lettuce

Started in 0.7 EC Urban Farm Fertilizers (UFF) veg formula in rainwater. Because that's what I fed my other AG's today. No special plan.

The temporaries are just to test out my new Aerogarden and the LED's. The red lettuce especially should tell tales about the light strength, and I've grown all those plants before. They'll be long eaten and forgotten before a tomato fruits. But! This is a fast tomato:

This is a 2014 AAS winning hybrid - though I bought the seed before that. This was my next pick to try growing a tomato inside. Opinions seem to vary - some say it grows up to 3' if trained, some that it trails up to 18" from baskets, some that it's 15" tall and 18" wide. Some say it harvests in 50 days from transplant, and is determinate. Some say 60 days, and produces all summer long. Some say the little plant somehow produces 350 1/2 oz. grape tomatos of exceptional sweetness (12 brix?)

Well, let's see. smiley

Harvest:

1024 - first ripe tomato 2/8, age 12 weeks, terminated grow 7/4, age 33 weeks

The End came yesterday. What

The End came yesterday. What a good run... 1024 tomatoes harvested by 33 weeks, 86 in the last two weeks. There was nothing wrong with the plant. For all I know, in the window, it could have kept up for another 3 months and 1k tomatoes or more. It certainly needed more light than the AG LED could give, but that's normal with tomatoes. Light pigs.

Fantastico is definitely up there with Juliet for sheer tomato production. Yet in a compact plant.

I'm letting this Aerogarden take a break for a month at least. Then maybe replant with tomato or eggplant, haven't decided.

938 tomatoes harvested by 31

938 tomatoes harvested by 31 weeks, 124 in the past two weeks. Gradually retiring this grow.

It got hot. If I'm running the A/C, that windowshade can't remain open. So moved this Aerogarden back to the living room for end of life. Had to lop off lots of plant, and continuing to pluck off any buds. It doesn't have enough light, but there's no point in giving it extra when the agenda is just to finish ripening fruit and retire.

They taste good at the moment. I gave several hundred away, but am back to eating them now.

814 tomatoes harvested by 29

814 tomatoes harvested by 29 weeks, 183 in the past two weeks. I'm tired of these.

The plant looks more tired, but not in any terminal way. More like laden branches falling break other stuff when they fall. I quit bothering to tie it up.

631 tomatoes harvested so far

631 tomatoes harvested so far at age 27 weeks, 82 in the past two weeks. That doesn't include any of the red fruit on the photo.

There's nothing about this plant that suggests it's going to quit anytime soon. Looks exuberantly healthy. The size and flavor of the fruit are definitely improved by the sunny window.

But - it's going to start getting hot now, so it may have to give up its window.

Thanks for the info on that.

Thanks for the info on that. Asking because it says it is super concentrated. Always afraid of burning.

549 tomatoes harvested so far

549 tomatoes harvested so far at 25 weeks. Could have been more, but I still have tomatoes in a bowl from last week.

Yes, I pruned it. Can't you tell? Me neither. Still loaded with fruit, red and green.

Hi, Corinne - I mix the UFF

Hi, Corinne - I mix the UFF Texas Tomato food it in a gallon jug, then add it to the reservoir (after draining). I think it's about 15 ml, but I measure it with a truncheon to get it to ~2.2 EC, and adjust. You could just follow the manufacturer's instructions for a gallon...

I can't really see into the reservoir to tell where the fill line is, so a gallon works.

Thanks, Corinne. No, not

Thanks, Corinne. smiley No, not really the more-AGs time of year. Though an outdoor Fantastico might not have time for quite this many fruit in our lattitude. I think this one will keep going until my transplant-sized outdoor tomatoes start producing.

The one-step Urban Farm Fertilizers Texas Tomato Food is easy and organic, and sure seems to keep the plant healthy looking.

I am so impressed.  I have

I am so impressed.  I have several soil ones going, but they are still in the seedling stage. I am tempted to transplant them INTO to AG after seeing your  project...but...no more machines!
